This is one unpredictable and insane business, but by some strange coincidences it all balances out...

The way things were going in the first three nights, this would have been a disaster and a debacle, but the last two nights saved the week and made it out to be only somewhat disappointing as a whole rather than the total disaster that it could have been... May I not see many as bad as this in a good, long, time...

It's a relief that I had a busier week, but it's more tiring and less relaxing. At least the bills will be more easily paid this week...

The week started out well, but it kept looking more scary and dismal as it went along... Times are getting increasingly desperate.

This was a disappointing week except for Monday, but at least I got my regular car back...
I would find it very difficult to wait as you do at times
Ahhhh, don't you just hate that "check engine" light. So many cars drive around with that on. I find it's usually best to say nothing.
I ignored the check engine light on my own car, and it went out all by itself... We used to cover that thing up with black electrical tape, or trace it out with magic marker back when the taxis were running on propane. I only look forward to the fuel consumption problem being solved once and for all.
😢
I miss my mom.
I miss mine too. Dementia takes them away slowly.
I wonder if the mechanics were not certified to work on a car like that and messed it up.
Something definitely got messed up. I texted the owner, and he said he'd get it sorted next Tuesday... That means that the car will be a pig on Sunday and Monday nights for me.
Our moms were born the same year. Happy Birthday to her !
Happy birthday to your mom too!
Happy 🎉 Birthday to your Mom !
She never thought she'd make it to ninety, she told me this morning...
@@foodquig Congratulations to her. Today is also our 33rd Anniversary here
@@DonnerPassWhisky Way to go! Congratulations!
I see deer at night here.
I see them at all hours,.. I also see raccoons, rats, rabbits, owls, but I have yet to see a cougar in town...
You're in summer out there aren't you? Deer coming into to town looking for food?
Deer are always in town. They are everywhere, They come out of hiding when there's little or no traffic like at 5:30 AM, and there are plenty hedges, bushes, and shrubberies for them to much on. The bucks are especially building up their strength for the Autumn rut..
Have you considered speaking with the owner to shift from a fixed lease cost to a percentage lease that helps you make money on slow nights? You are taking all the risk of a slow night.
As it is, even on a slow night, I don't do much worse with the fixed lease than I would do with a percentage. With a percentage, I'd be losing out on the busier nights. I have been doing the business this way for over thirty years through the good times and the bad times, through prosperity and recession, and I always managed to make it. I'm only five years away from retirement, so why change things now? To me, going to a percentage would be like going to work for an hourly wage in a brick and mortar establishment with a boss leaning over my shoulder, telling me all the time what to do and how to do it. I hate micro-management. I prefer no management at all! That's what has kept me doing the cab thing for so long even though the hours are long, and I could make more money doing something else. After more than three decades of being my own boss, with all the benefits, freedoms, and risks involved, I would be miserable and feel imprisoned as an employee.
@@foodquig 50/50 until lease is paid, then 100% for you. If the owner would really be struggling without you he might be willing to do it.
People must have trouble typing numbers into their little phone keypads for you to have it go wrong so often.
No. The problem was that two streets have the same name. I thought we were going to the Juan DeFuca Highway in Sooke, But our destination was Juan DeFuca Road in Shirley. The text message was "2966 Juan DeFuca," and my passenger said that it was in Sooke, and there is no 2966 Juan DeFuca Highway. With GPS, it's garbage in, garbage out.
@@foodquig Frustrating.
That buck was so cool! Must be the season for them.
The real season for them is around October when they resemble boys wrestling...
@@foodquig Right, I know that. Strange then.
I really get annoyed at how many people just take a cab and have no intention of paying…
I'm sure that I get more annoyed than you do... I know bad drugs has something to do with it. It's just like that guy a few weeks ago who put all kinds of garbage in my car and wasted the whole morning half of the shift. People don't usually talk the way these two annoying people did.
I know it well. Great place if you love endless grey days and endless rain.
Taxi driving is soul destroying
Do more awesome science fiction reviews. They are awesome.
It has been a while since I read much science fiction...
I'm sure you've already thought of this but what about working some weekends or day shifts? I know it's not your preference but could there possibly be some better business there?
I have talked with drivers who work weekends and day shifts, and their experience is not much better than mine...
That was not good at all. Maybe it's time to change jobs. Can't keep this up.
I still have time to decide what I'm going to do...
My dad is actually in a very similar situation right now with his job, he’s been looking at other jobs lately but it’ll be a rough transition. What sucks is he’s already retired, but it’s nowhere near enough. He has to work for at least 8 more years then he gets an increase on his pension.
I could apply for a pension right now, but I'd only get three or four hundred dollars a month. I will get a lot more if I wait five years, and after those five years I can also get old age security...
When I was working corporate, a restaurant I made regular pickups and drop off too, SPQR in auckland cbd, popular with high profile people, went into liquidation. This slowdown is a worldwide thing. You are not alone. I’d tough it out. Recessionary times only last a while. You’ll be on 500 nights again soon. Remember, the only constant in life is change. Remember 2008?
Oh yes, I remember 2008... But back then we didn't have UBER.
@foodquig ahhhh. I remember suggesting, when you said uber was coming to town, plan do something else. Uber decimated the taxi industry here. If you wanted to buy shares in a taxi, Co-op taxis for example, Two hundred thousand dollar shares halved over night. I was corporate cabs. I saw the writing on the wall. To buy in to corporate, was 30k. Then you buy the car etc on top of that. I got out just in time. Didn't make a loss. But a lot of guys that hung on, they lost money. Just have up their licenses. Couldn't sell them.
@@k9nick I'm just glad that I never bought a taxi. I can walk away at any time. I'm just not ready to do that yet...
Not easy and I really feel bad for you… we can only hope that it will look better as the summer progresses, take care.
Things would still be better without UBER taking away some of our business...
I hate to see you in a week like this.
I don't exactly like it either...
@@foodquig No, not a good week. Hope it turns upwards soon.
smokin on that dad pack🚬🚬🚬
Look! It has a liquor store! Hilarious.
You did good.
Yes I did.
I don't use Uber.
GOOD!!!
Every time I go to the theatre with Veronica, when we go to Stratford, even if it's extremely interesting, I end up almost falling asleep. It's so very dark there and we have lunch just before. It didn't happen when we went to The Mousetrap in Ingersoll because it wasn't dark like Stratford.
Yes, darkness helps me sleep too...
The mousetrap? I just saw that in London in May!
True with your description, Friday is taxi vlog night ! Nice to see the airport again !
Yes, seeing the airport again was a treat for me, but seeing it twice in a row was right over the top!
Yaaaay Friday!!!
LOL
As always, many thanks for the uploads. Glad the Sunday was busy.
The week turned out alright!
You could write a book on strange customers.
The good part is that I can forget about them after a while...
I always enjoy your stories with those strange people… comforts me that we are all more “normal” that people say ! Seems like really big weeks are not for the foreseeable future. I read that taxi drivers are suffering bad over here…
It's a global phenomenon that we're suffering. The economy and Uber are hurting us...
how much do u have saved so far for retirement?
Oh wow, it's Friday! I didn't realise until your video popped up.
I try to put them up on time :)
I doubt mine is better than yours.
It's all relative...
Andy. When you talk with other drivers in the night, are they having tough times too? Those working the city etc
We are all feeling it, Nick.
Putting money in the bank is ALWAYS useful. And I find asking for money very uncomfortable, too, no matter the situation.
When you get in the car, it's a tacit contract. I drive you to your destination, you pay me there. It's too simple. It's too bad that the police do nothing to help us, as the police station is a big revolving door. If they make an arrest, the suspect is released, they all know this, and get away with it all the time...
Interesting that the lady paid you what was due but… only because you had her again in the car… well at least it worked out
She even claimed to be glad that our paths crossed again... She was most apologetic.
Well you had a boring shift then. I have been running a cab service for 21 years in rural east Texas, I know how much fun you have :) I stopped running after 10pm, due to the crack heads and meth heads, it was getting to weird and people didn't want to pay the fare. So I just block their numbers now. I figured if I had to keep a gun in my hand, it just wasn't worth it. So I guess I should have made a UA-cam channel out of it lol. You be careful out there, I enjoy your videos keep up the good work
Only five years to go until retirement. In that time, all I need to do is avoid trips with people who didn't pay me the last time, it's easy. They keep on giving their real names to a call. The other things to avoid are Friday and Saturday nights, downtown, and special events...
Reminds me of my university days where some friends place reeked of the smell of pot… interesting how you met such a pleasant person, helps to forget the few jerks this week…
She was exactly who I needed to meet when I did...
Havn't seen mum and sis for ages. How old is mum now? Think you seem to eat a lot of poutine when you visit.
My mother will be ninety years old in one month and seven days.
Glad it was mostly a good week.
oh yes indeed...
Good thing he went back. That would have been a waste if he forgot.
The whole thing was a waste... I was sent to the same place for the same name last night. I gave the trip back to the system.
when you take homeless people ask for the money up front
MOST of them give me no trouble at all... This week has been a bad one for for cheating customers. I just add them to the list of names whose calls I will not respond to
@@foodquig ahh that good
I don't smoke it but I love the smell when other people do. I know, I'm weird. When I had some pot smoking neighbours a few years back I couldn't wait for them to smoke outside beside my house. Of course they also enjoyed singing country music badly, so that was the downside. I'm so glad your week turned out well!
I have not heard of many people enjoying the smell of weed smoke...
@@foodquig I liked it from the first time I smelled it in high school.
Another story of Uber destroying the local taxi business. By the way, I imagine that the drivers for the taxi company up-island would also keep their tips along with the hourly wage
I'm sure you're right about the tips... The only thing I see as a problem is that the drivers have to have consistent $400 or higher shifts in order to earn their wages and keep the company from going under. I doubt that such levels are sustainable...
You should probably grab the job while you can.
I have time to think about things. There is no rush. I don't want to make a move only to regret it...
Sounds like you might not have any choice in the long run but to look for something else… sucks as it is the last few years before retirement… I feel really bad for you.
I will get by somehow. You don't need to feel bad for me.
Got to try these things I guess…could maybe rough it and head downtown on fri night? How long you got to retirement Andy?
There are four things that I avoid in the taxi business: Friday night; Saturday night; downtown; and special events. Those four things are what everyone else goes for. I go the other way... I have five years to go.
@fehquig I understand why. However, in these days of dog eat dog..... in the short term....
Good old what's-his-face. I don't like walking in the rain either.
Thankfully, I only have to worry about him for one morning of the week...
